Unexploded Bomb Found Close to London City Airport
Posted by Paul Fiddian on 04/06/2008 - 12:56:18
An unexploded World War Two bomb was found on June 3rd in the vicinity of London City Airport (LCY).
Its discovery was made by workman in the area, and led to a number of flight cancellations.
By early evening, however, the inner-city hub had resumed full operations, although with a proviso that some flights would still be delayed.
LCY Departures, Arrivals
The disruption period lasted around three hours and, during this time, no departures took place, while arrivals were diverted to London Heathrow and Southend Airports, among others.
2012 Olympics
The bomb was found in Stratford during construction work related to the 2012 Olympic Games, which is taking place in the East London area.
Bomb Disposal
Consequently, the London Metropolitan Police said that army troops had arrived at the scene, together with experts in the field of bomb disposal. The area in which the bomb was found would be isolated, they added, with an exclusion zone implemented throughout today and until the end of the week.
Yesterday’s events approximately replicated those of two years ago, when another live bomb was found close to London City. Then, the knock-on effects caused a three-hour grounding to be imposed on flights while a controlled detonation took place.
London City Airport Passenger Levels
Growing dissatisfaction at London Heathrow has resulted in greater numbers of passengers using London City, with levels reaching nearly 300,000 in April.
The airport is the choice of many London workers, who favour its convenience for the business-heavy parts of the capital, as well as the fact that - due to its relative size compared to other London airports - waiting times there are shorter.
As this News Item was being written, passengers were being told to speak with the airline they were travelling with for information on the current status of their flight.
