Frankfurt Airport has unveiled their expansion of Terminal 1 after about four years of construction.
The 800 meter long extension, dubbed Pier A-Plus, opened on schedule with flights to begin operations from Wednesday. The development will accommodate up to six million more passengers annually, totaling around 65 million per year.
The complex, costing about €700m, will be exclusively used by Deutsche Lufthansa AG and its Star Alliance partners. The Pier A-Plus has also improved docking facilities that better serve wide-body aircraft, such as the Airbus A380 and the Boeing B747 range.

Dr Stefan Schulte, executive board chairman of Fraport, the international air business that operates Frankfurt airport, said the new development would demonstrate the hub as a leader in aviation. The extra capacity allowance would accommodate the increased traffic expected over the next coming years.
He added, "This terminal expansion also sets new standards for the travel experience of our passengers and for terminal management.
"Our guests from around the world will benefit from advanced handling facilities and a wide range of shops and restaurants. Easier transferring between short-haul and long-haul flights will result in enhanced comfort of our customers."
Executive board chairman of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Christoph Franz believes guest will appreciate the five new lounges and latest technology.
Terminal 1 Expansion
The new terminal expansion, at 185,000 square meters, is Frankfurt Airport's biggest development since the opening of Terminal 2 in 1994. Pier A-Plus provides optimum flexibility with its seven docking stations. Four are able to accommodate double decker aircraft such as the A380 superjumbo, or alternatively, the expansion could house eleven narrow-body jets simultaneously.
Construction began in December 2008, with some work only able to be carried out at night.
Florian Rentsch, Hesse's minister of economics and transportation, asserted, "The inauguration of the new Pier A-Plus represents another important chapter of the Frankfurt hub and its users.
"I am convinced that the system partnership existing between Fraport and Lufthansa will continue writing this success story that also benefits the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region."
