McCarran Terminal 3

Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport's hi-tech new Terminal 3 went into operation today after a $1.6bn development programme.

The new home for McCarran's international flights, McCarran Terminal 3 was finished within budget and on schedule to meet its 27 June opening date. Covering an area of 1.9m square feet, the new Las Vegas airport terminal is set to raise McCarran's annual passenger capacity to 55 million.

Owned by Clark County, McCarran International Airport handled almost 40 million passengers in 2010, with over 500,000 individual aircraft movements recorded. Previously, Terminal 1 handled its domestic flights, while international and charter flights were the domain of Terminal 2. Now, Terminal 2 is closing, with Terminal 3 taking its place.

McCarran Terminal 3 boasts 117 gates and its own separate ticketing, baggage reclaim and parking facilities. In future months, a number of based carriers will relocate to it - JetBlue Airways, Virgin America, Alaska Airlines and Frontier Airlines among them.

Advanced air travel technology features throughout McCarran Terminal 3. This includes self-boarding passenger gates and hi-tech aircraft docking systems that automate the aircraft alignment process, freeing up airport ground support staff for other tasks. There are also over 1,000 LED and LCD displays displaying up-to-the-second airport data.

"This was the biggest expansion project ever undertaken at McCarran and it has probably been the most challenging one", Clark County Department of Aviation's director, Randall H. Walker, explained in a press release on the Las Vegas airport's terminal opening.

"[Terminal developer] Bechtel's detailed planning, regular communications and problem-solving ability have helped to ensure the success of this project, and we are delighted that Terminal 3 will now be able to welcome even more people to Las Vegas."

"Building Terminal 3 while the rest of the airport was still operational was challenging but our longstanding partnership with the Clark County Department of Aviation has been instrumental to our completion of this project on schedule", Bechtel's Don Wright added.
