Yesterday's landing crash at London Heathrow Airport involving a British Airways Boeing 777 has led to passengers facing delays and cancellations at the airport.

With the southern runway still closed while Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) officials investigate the accident, all traffic at Heathrow has to use the northern runway.

The accident led to many incoming and outgoing flights - mainly short-haul routes - being cancelled at Heathrow.

A spokesman from the British Airports Authority (BAA), the company which operates Heathrow, said decisions about flight cancellations would be taken by the airlines on a "case-by-case basis" according to their individual commercial needs.

The spokesman advised any passengers due to use Heathrow today, whether departing or arriving from the airport, to check with their airline.

He added: “Heathrow is an airport which runs pretty much at full capacity all the time and so any incident is bound to have a significant effect”.

Airport International advises passengers using Heathrow today to check the BAA Heathrow Airport flight information website for the very latest updates:

Heathrow Airport Flight Information

Thursday's Landing Crash Caused Diversions

BAA said that Thursday's crash caused 222 flights to and from Heathrow to be cancelled.

Over 20 other flights were diverted into the three other London airports - Gatwick, Stansted and Luton.

To help ease the backlog of flights which had built up yesterday afternoon and evening, the airport received special dispensation from the Department of Transport to allow more night flights.
