Heathrow Airport Climate Protest Wraps Up

Camp for Climate Change, the week-long protest held at London Heathrow Airport, has now drawn to a close. The seven day event was held primarily on land situated to the north of Heathrow, but, in its latter stages, spread further afield. Airport International has covered events as they have unfolded, and now brings you the conclusion to a frantic week of action at Heathrow.
Camp for Climate Change reached its peak on Sunday 19th August, when a large number of campaigners amassed outside airport operator BAA’s offices. Prior to that, smaller groups had held protests at Biggin Hill and Farnborough Airports.
On the final day, Monday 20th August, a whole host of events took place at locations across the country. These included at the Sizewell nuclear power station, located on the east coast, where five campaigners clamped themselves to a block of concrete. Elsewhere, in London, around 20 activists rallied in front of offices owned by Bridge Capital (which owns Leeds Bradford Airport), while a further eight stuck themselves to the principal buildings of BP.
According to the organisers of Camp for Climate Action, this final day stood as a “great victory”, in which their message was transmitted to a huge audience. Among senior figures within the police, the sentiment was that significant monitoring of the event had taken place to permit peaceful protest, while any offenders within the gathering had been effectively dealt with.
In total, approximately 65 people were arrested between the 14th and 20th August. Any pre-conceived notions of violent protest en masse were, in the main, dispelled.
In the days leading up to the Camp, BAA had successfully obtained an injunction against certain, known members of campaign groups.
