Beijing Capital International Airport has launched an anti-terrorism programme aimed at bolstering the airport's security ahead of the Olympic Games in August.
According to the Xinhuanet news agency, the programme includes the installation of double fences around the airport's perimeter and the deployment of extra high-tech devices.
The Civil Aviation Adminstration of China (CAAC) said the measures would mean Beijing will be "one of the world leaders in high-tech security measures".
The programme is expected to be complete by the end of the month. The Olympics begin on August 6th.
The main focus of the Beijing Airport security programme will be on building more airport perimeter fencing around the two operational runways, taxiways, apron areas and control towers.
Police booths will be built into the fencing to help improve monitoring of the site's perimeter. Manholes around the perimeter which lead to sewers running underneath the taxiway and apron areas will be reinforced by steel barriers.
Steel window guards will be fitted to windows on buildings facing out onto the operational side of the airport, with the exception of the terminal buildings and maintenance hangars.
Zhang Zhi, the deputy director of Beijing Airport police, also informed journalists that the airport's bomb detection equipment will be improved with the addition of new, digital-based explosives detection, containment and disposal devices.
Anti-riot robots and X-ray machines will also be deployed at strategic locations around the airport, Zhi added.
Police will also set up checkpoints on the surrounding road network to check suspicious vehicles and individuals.
