Manchester Airport has introduced a new terminal layout which the airport says will deliver "hassle free" airport secuity for its passengers.
The airport has opened the first stage in the redevelopment of Terminal 1 - and for the first time at any UK airport, passengers now pass through security first before reaching airside shops and restaurants.
This has resulted in a newly-enlarged security screening hall for the terminal including more security lanes and new security scanning equipment.
The airport believes the changes will improve the efficiency of security screening at Manchester. The idea is that by getting the security screening out of the way first, passengers will relax more - which in turn will lead to reduced hassle.
Manchester Airport's managing director Andrew Cornish said: "Everyone accepts that tightened security is necessary but passengers want to get through the security experience as quickly as possible with as little fuss as possible and then they can start relaxing and enjoying their holiday".
He continued: "The new security screening area is a big step forward...[it will] put passengers as ease as much as possible during what we know is one of the most stressful parts of airport travel".
The airport says Manchester T1's new layout is also more appopriate given the security restrictions regarding the carriage of liquids and gels as hand luggage.
Under current security rules, passengers are only allowed to carry liquids, gels and aerosols in containers no bigger than 100ml.
This has resulted in passengers having to discard products that do not meet this criteria, some of which they have purchased at shops before getting to the security checkpoints.
By removing "pre-security" retail and leisure facilities, the airport believes this problem can be reduced.
The security hall, costing £10 million, includes a host of new equipment featuring vapour testing machines designed to detect unauthorised liquids, and latest-generation 3D X-Ray scanning machines.
The new hall includes no fewer than 14 separate security lanes - 10 have been opened this week, with the remaining four to be open by the start of the peak holiday season in June.
Manchester T1's new layout is set to be repeated at the airport's other two terminals in the future.
