Heathrow Airport Evacuated as Suspect Package Found
In breaking news, London Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 4 has this afternoon been evacuated after the discovery of a suspicious-looking bag. Comment from one of the passengers affected, speaking to news agency Reuters, detailed how: "The tannoy is telling everyone to evacuate the terminal. They're saying a suspect package has been found."
Officials at London Heathrow confirmed the presence of a suspect package, and that a search was consequently now underway on all passengers. A statement has also been issued by BAA, Heathrow’s operator, in which it states: "In response to a suspect bag in Terminal 4, secondary searches are now being carried out on departing passengers. Contingency plans have now been activated. We are working with the police to bring a swift resolution to the incident.”
It is understood that those forced to leave the Terminal are gathered in Heathrow’s arrivals area. Furthermore, as described by a passenger at the scene: "Several thousand people are now out in the car park and security staff are saying that all baggage is going to have to go through checks again."
This news comes in the aftermath of the string of attempted terrorist attacks in the UK over the past few days. Beginning with the discovery of an explosive device in London’s Haymarket, this led to a vehicle which, set on fire, was driven into Glasgow Airport’s Terminal 1 on Saturday afternoon. As a result, the UK’s security alert level has remained set to ‘Critical’ ever since. Eight people have so far been arrested in connection with these crimes.
