Glasgow Airport Reopens After Terrorist Attack
Following the terrorist attack of two days ago, Glasgow Airport has today reintroduced normal operations. Despite this, as per BAA, some flights remain cancelled. The airport operator is consequently advising passengers to check with the relevant airline before leaving home. Although Glasgow Airport’s forecourt remains cordoned off, both the principal Terminal 1, and the hub’s car parks, are now open once again.
Regarding Glasgow Airport’s current status, Donald Morrison, a spokesman for the airport, stated: "The airport is fully operational and the vast majority of flights appear to be running to schedule. We would advise anyone concerned about the status of their flight to check with their airline before leaving for the airport. However, the airport is back in business and it seems that the schedule is back to normal."
Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, has highlighted the rapidity of the efforts made to propel Glasgow Airport back to a state of normality. Describing it as a “spectacular achievement”, Mr Salmond, speaking on BBC Radio, said: "I think it has been much better than adequate, it has been exceptional, particularly from our emergency services. Think of it. Only two days afterwards, less than that, one-and-a-half days after a major terrorist incident at Glasgow Airport, the airport is up and running and functioning normally. That's a spectacular achievement and I think it is symbolic of the attitude of the rest of the country.”
"Today it has been back to work as normal. Indeed, just about the only people who are not working today are the folk who are flying out on holiday from Glasgow and other airports."
Mr Salmond additionally drew attention to Scotland’s Muslim community, which he stated had made a huge contribution. "We should be exceptionally proud of our Muslim community in Scotland”, he announced.
The effects of Saturday’s terrorist attack were quick to spread to Scotland’s other major airports. Aberdeen and Glasgow airport forecourts are not presently accessible to private vehicles. Friends and family who would be offering a drop off/collection service to their arriving/departing relatives are being urged to avoid this unless no other option exists. All scheduled flights from both airports will operate, albeit some on a delayed basis.
