The Met Office is an ICAO recognised World Area Forecast Centre (WAFC) providing the aviation community with global forecasts of winds, temperatures and significant weather above 24,000ft. It also provides the UK with a low-level aviation service for each of its 52 civil aerodromes. It also provides bespoke services to the Airline, Airport and ATC industries to enable them to better mitigate against the affects of weather events.
A Trading Fund, owned by the UK Ministry of Defence, the Met Office has considerable experience in assisting the re-establishment, or development of new meteorological infrastructures or services at international and national airports, to enable them to achieve ICAO standards for aviation meteorology provision.
Recent advances in technology now mean that the Met Office can provide vital real-time meteorological information to all sectors of the aviation industry. These services help reduce weather related delays, allow managers to better plan for usual and extraordinary weather events and to increase capacity at airfields though weather mitigation.
