EquiLift Limited, formally part of the multi-national ThyssenKrupp group, is a key player in the accessibility industry. Tracing their history back to the mid 1800’s when Gimson, a Leicester based engineering family, were building and installing beam engines – used for Pumping stations.

The family developed the business into other engineering businesses including the design, manufacture and installation of Passenger Lifts. This lead to the addition of homelifts, stairlifts and wheelchair platform lifts in the 1970’s before selling the company in 1986.

In 1991 Thyssen bought the business, combining it with their developing worldwide Accessibility Group. In February 2006 the Management Team completed the purchase of the business from ThyssenKrupp and changed the name to EquiLift.

Now, as an independent company, we have access to a wider range of products allowing us to offer a more complete and effective range of lifting solutions. We do retain strong links with ThyssenKrupp and our StairGlide range of domestic chairlifts includes the market leading lift for curved stairways, Flow.

Responsible for the supply, installation and maintenance of public access products such as wheelchair platforms, stairlifts and vertical lifts EquiLift’s products are renowned for improving the lives of thousands of people, who use wheelchairs or have difficulties climbing stairs.

The Disability Discrimination Act, altered in 2004 – and now legally enforceable, means that all shops and public buildings in the UK have to be accessible to those in wheelchairs. At EquiLift, we work together with businesses to help them comply with these regulations without having to make drastic alterations.

EquiLift is a member of the Lift & Escalator Industry Association (LEIA), the trade association for the lift industry, which safeguards customers when purchasing commercial wheelchair lifts and home stairlifts.
