Latest Company News From Smiths Detection.
Smiths Detection Ireland has taken major international honours in winning the Grand Prix du Jury prize at the European Grand Prix for Innovation Awards, held recently in Monaco. This annual prize, first awarded in 1994, promotes applied research in European industry and is considered by many as the ‘Nobel Prize’ in the European field of research and development.
The 2005 prize was awarded to Smiths Detection Ireland for its development of an advanced security screening system, ‘Tadar’, which detects concealed threat objects on people as they pass through checkpoints such as at airport security channels.
Using millimetre-wave technology, the Tadar system is capable of identifying metallic, plastic, explosive and other materials that a person may be concealing beneath clothing. It is completely harmless to the person being screened, using only the natural background and body radiation to detect threats. Tadar represents a significant improvement over the commonly deployed people screening systems, which only detect metal objects..
Smiths Detection established a development, manufacturing and service presence in Ireland following the acquisition of Farran Technology earlier this year. A major investment programme is currently being implemented by Smiths at Ballincollig, where employment numbers have doubled to 40 since the beginning of the year.
