What is the Pet Travel Scheme? The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) is the system that allows cats and dogs from certain countries to enter the UK without completing a period of time in quarantine as long as they meet certain conditions.
It also means that people in the UK can take their pets to these countries and bring them back without the need for quarantine. The official DEFRA website: www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine clearly presents the procedure for importing dogs and cats into the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme.
Requirements to join the PETS Scheme
- Animals must travel to the UK from compliant countries and on approved routes (Unless consigned to quarantine kennels).
- Pets must be fitted with a microchip and issued with a certificate
- Rabies vaccination
- Rabies antibody blood test. This is to show the vaccine is working and must not be less than 30 days after the rabies vaccination.
- Rabies antibody test result (diagnostic result)
- The animal will be eligible to travel under the Pet Travel Scheme six months AFTER the date of the rabies antibody blood test.
- Be issued with an official PETS certificate
- Tick & Tapeworm treatment not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours prior to each travel date.
- Declaration to say that the animal has not been outside the PTS compliant countries.
Veterinary Advice etc - Tranquillisers are not suitable for animals travelling by air. Pressurised conditions on the aeroplane may result in adverse affects and the airline staff should be able see that the animals are fit and healthy.
- Pets travel in the livestock hold and enjoy the same ambient conditions as the passenger cabin.
- The captain signs a declaration to say that he is aware of livestockbeing aboard.
- Thousands of pets travel safely by air worldwide every year.
- Always check on the latest information well before travelling
- All original documents must accompany the animals for inspection upon arrival

Airpets Oceanic-receive pets daily from all over the world, arriving into quarantine or under the Pets Travel Scheme.
The UK Pet Travel Scheme is working well but often has the problem of there not being approved routes from certain countries. However, pets consigned to Airpets Oceanic may travel with national airlines under a *dual arrangement with an IDY import permit and Pet Travel Scheme regulations. The animals are transferred to Airpets own quarantine kennels at Heathrow which immediately apply to DEFRA for early release. The pets should spend a maximum of two days in kennels assuming all the paperwork is in order. A further problem arises when owners run out of time and are unable to complete the six-month preparation period leading up to export. However, animals consigned to Airpets may complete the remaining period in their quarantine kennels and then upon release be delivered by road or air to any UK destination.
