For a country that had not experienced major natural disasters, the tsunami that occurred in Sri Lanka on Boxing Day was both traumatic and calamitous.
With over 35,000 lives lost and houses and coastal infrastructure destroyed, a concerted international effort was necessary in the immediate aftermath to prevent even more loss of life by disease, and food and clean water shortages.
Greenshields Cowie has been involved in arranging shipment of essential relief supplies and equipment to Sri Lanka on behalf of various commercial and aid organisations. Among these shipments were five consignments of water purification pumps and equipment that was generously donated by ITT Industries. The equipment was delivered by air and is expected to meet the needs of more than 800,000 people.
More information on ITT’s contribution to the Tsunami relief effort can be seen on their website (http://www.itt.com/). Greenshields Cowie has found it a very satisfying experience to have acted as the logistics provider to this world leader in engineering and water technology, and to have played its own modest role in the humanitarian effort.
These photos show some of the equipment made ready for shipment and loading into road transport.
