U.S. certified explosives detection system will enhance passenger security at major international hub airport

L-3 Communications Security and Detection Systems, Inc. announced today that it has received a significant order to provide the Narita Airport Corporation (NAA) with the company's next-generation explosives detection system (EDS), the eXaminer 3DX® 6500, which will be used primarily to screen baggage for international flights at Tokyo-Narita International Airport (NRT). The eXaminers will be integrated into the automated baggage handling system of this major international hub airport.

L-3's exclusive distributor in this transaction was the Japan Aerospace Corporation (JAC), a major supplier of aerospace and aircraft systems. Under the terms of their agreement with L-3, JAC will provide installation, maintenance, service, and training for the eXaminer systems deployed at NRT.

According to Allen Barber, president of L-3 Security and Detection Systems, the NAA order represents a growing interest among international airport operators in the certification standards set by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for EDS technology that automatically screens aircraft hold baggage for explosives. The L-3 eXaminer is one of only two inline systems certified by the TSA. There are currently more than 500 L-3 EDS systems deployed worldwide.

"L-3 is committed to providing airport operators around the world with the most effective
explosives detection system to help make commercial aviation safer," said Mr. Barber. "We're pleased that NAA chose the TSA-certified eXaminer, which offers airlines, airports, and security personnel the most advanced and reliable baggage screening solution in the industry."

NRT is one of Asia's busiest hub airports, and is a major departure point for transpacific flights to the United States. By adopting the TSA-certified eXaminer EDS to screen baggage, airport officials will not only enhance overall security, but also minimise the complications for U.S.-bound travelers whose baggage is sometimes screened more than once.

The L-3 eXaminer 3DX® 6500 uses a superior technology platform to automatically detect explosives in baggage. The eXaminer also provides a rapid, complete 3D image for analysis by operators of alarmed bags, resulting in unmatched on-screen resolution (OSR) time, further improving efficiencies so bags get to planes more quickly.

The eXaminer 3DX® 6500 also retains the unique technology and key features of the earlier generation eXaminer 3DX® 6000, including its advanced 3D imaging capability that allows operators to resolve alarmed bags more quickly, resulting in improved operational efficiencies.

Networking capabilities introduced with the eXaminer 3DX® 6000, allowing images from multiple machines to be evaluated on any networked workstation, have also been retained.
