L-3 Security & Detection Systems

Explosives detection system and checkpoint X-ray scanners will boost security in Latin America’s most important airport.

L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that it has delivered 14 eXaminer 3DX® explosives detection systems, two networked eXaminer explosives detection system (NEDS), and 23 PX-M checkpoint X-ray systems to Mexico City International Airport (AICM) as part of its airport expansion program. This comprehensive range of checkpoint security and explosives detection equipment is being deployed in the airport's newly renovated terminals one and two.

"The addition of L-3's checked baggage screening technology to AICM is an important step in Latin America's compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) mandated aviation security upgrades," said Thomas Ripp, President of L-3 Security and Detection Systems.

"Serving more than 24 million travelers every year, Mexico City International is the most heavily traveled airport in Latin America. In supplying the airport with leading-edge threat detection technology, we are adding a necessary layer of security to the region's aviation infrastructure."

L-3's eXaminer 3DX explosives detection system, certifieExplosives Detection Systemsd by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), uses multi-slice CT imaging technology to provide full 3D imaging for rapid, accurate object scanning and threat detection.

The networked configuration, or NEDS, will enable multiple eXaminer scanners, scanners, baggage viewing systems, and search workstations to be linked over a secure network.

The PX-M checkpoint X-ray screening system delivers the highest resolution available in any X-ray baggage screening system of its kind; AICM will use the PX-Ms to screen medium-sized carryon baggage for threats.

The ICAO has mandated that airports within its member countries perform 100-percent checked-baggage screening for explosives.

In addition to providing comprehensive checked-baggage screening systems to AICM, L-3 recently deployed automated explosives detection technology in Mexico's nine Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) group airports to help them meet the ICAO mandate.
