Gilardoni S.p.A., founded in Mandello del Lario (LC) back in 1947, is the most important Italian company operating in the sector of security and imaging diagnostics.
The last-born machine in its wide family is FEP ME 640 DEXGIL, a break-through machine carrying real innovation among X-ray scanners for carry-on luggage.

Explosive Detection System Software
DEXGIL is a revolutionary software for the control of hand luggage that automatically detects explosives according to the European E.D.S. standard (Explosive Detection System), and it also provides a better picture of the contents of the luggage thanks to an unmatched image quality with the best resolution and penetration on the market.

Figure 2: Example of DEXGIL software alarming an object
Automatic recognition is obtained thanks to sophisticated algorithms that make the detection of critical masses of explosive materials possible even when they are hidden under other objects. This sensitivity and precision in recognising dangerous items is one of the most important features, unique in its kind, of this system: up to now, it has been used to check hold luggage, where image definition is not so important, and this is the first time it has been applied to carry-on baggage. More, FEP ME 640 DEXGIL offers to the operator an exceptional image definition, to match the European regulations, in terms of performance, for hand-baggage investigation.
This means:
- in terms of resolution: sharpness of the image, quality of the details and thus greater ease of interpretation;
- in terms of penetration: the possibility to see through thicker materials reduces the need to perform manual baggage checks.
These features are greatly superior to those of even the finest equipment currently available in the field and they push the FEP ME 640 DEXGIL at the top level of the worldwide market.

Flexible Security Check Management
Thanks to its architecture, FEP ME 640 DEXGIL can adapt to peak flows of passengers, just adding extra workstations: this reduces any possible discomfort and offers the maximum flexibility of control, while optimising the management of the personnel assigned to security checks.

Among the functions of the equipment that designers kept into consideration during the development, there were also the needs for safety and ergonomics of the operator, applying every possible facility to reduce stress to a minimum (including visual stress with the adoption, for example, of special LCD screens).
FEP ME 640 DEXGIL is designed to offer a wide range of network services: it can use a regular Ethernet connection, exploiting TCP/IP protocol. This configuration allows remote management of all the machines connected to a network (which becomes more and more like a "matrix architecture"), remote diagnostics and servicing, remote reporting of the operator performance and remote handling of the data of interest (saved images, user database...). Having all these services available, a supervisor can manage the network he's in duty of without any difficulties, ensuring the maximum operating flexibility and reducing the overhead costs of the service.
Baggage Screening Security

FEP ME 640 DEXGIL is a really revolutionary machine in the struggle against terrorism and contraband.
"The growing need of security, the need to speed up the operations of baggage screening and the comfort of both operators and passengers has all been taken in consideration developing this equipment. Our R&D people have used powerful processing instruments and proprietary algorithms in this system to give the machine a sophisticated ability to discriminate materials, ease of use, flexibility in operation and total reliability", says the project engineering manager, Mr. Andrea Ascani Orsini,
"This device was designed for the aviation field but it is actually ideal also to inspect other potentially sensitive points related to naval and rail transportation, as well as point of access to special events, and every place where security is the first concern." says the Sales Manager for the Security Division, Mr. Angelo Gianola.
The Managing Director, Marco Taccani Gilardoni, concludes by pointing out that "FEP ME 640 DEXGIL is the winning choice in the challenge against terrorism and it does fulfill all the needs of security, reliability, flexibility and simplification of the procedures of controlling transport system in today's world. It is the best compromise between high level of security, high checkpoint throughput and low space consumption. And it is really operator-friendly!"
