- Exceeds TSA Certification Performance Requirements for EDS Screening of Checked Baggage NEW YORK, NY, August 6, 2003 - L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its Security and Detection Systems division has received certification for the eXaminer™ 3DX 1000 Explosives Detection System (EDS).
The certification means that has the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has approved the eXaminer 3DX 1000 to detect small amounts of explosives in checked bags. The eXaminer 3DX 1000 is the first EDS system in its class to receive certification, which was accomplished on the first attempt.
An extension of the FAA’s ARGUS program, an initiative to develop state-of-the-art EDS technology to scan checked luggage at small airports and other low-throughput applications, the eXaminer 3DX 1000 is a smaller version of the widely deployed eXaminer 3DX 6000. The eXaminer 3DX 1000 combines high-resolution computed tomography (CT) design with traditional X-ray technology to produce crisp, clear 3D images displayable in a multi-view format, allowing operators several options when viewing scanned baggage and their contents.
L-3 Communications, in combination with CT manufacturer Analogic Corporation (Nasdaq: ALOG), utilized the industry’s most advanced technologies to develop a smaller and cost effective EDS for specific lower throughput applications. The eXaminer 3DX 1000 examines all objects in the baggage for potential threats, and provides maximum explosive detection capability with few false alarms.
“Our eXaminer 3DX 1000 is another effective tool for security agencies around the world to use in countering the threats from terrorists,” said Joseph Paresi, president of L-3 Security and Detection Systems. “We are excited to receive certification on our newest eXaminer model. Achieving certification on our first attempt validates our thorough understanding of EDS technologies and the complexity of the threats we are countering.”
