Shanghai Airport T2 Baggage Handling System Handed Over In Record Time

Fki Logistex

FKI Logistex® Global leader in integrated materials handling systems continues to build major presence in South East Asia.

FKI Logistex®, a global leader in integrated material handling solutions, has successfully completed the installation and handover of a major Baggage Handling System at the new Shanghai Pudong International Airport Terminal 2.  This extensive project was delivered both on schedule and in virtually half the normal lead-time required for a contract of this scale and complexity - reflecting FKI Logistex’s superior project management expertise and the power of its advanced emulation software technology to minimise project site time and costs.

Designed to accommodate future traffic growth and expansion, the FKI Logistex baggage handling system has been constructed to meet the long-term operational requirements of Shanghai’s T2 - anticipated to be some 22 million passengers annually by 2010 and 40 million by 2015.

Mr Hoa, Project Manager, Shanghai Pudong Airport, says: “ We are delighted FKI Logistex was prepared to accept the challenge of what is, by any measure, an ultra-fast and demanding installation schedule.  Delivering the contract smoothly and on time in only 26 months clearly underlines the Baggage Sorter - Shanghai Airportcompany’s tremendous strengths and capabilities and highlights the professionalism and depth of its technical and management expertise.”

A key benefit provided by FKI Logistex during the design and build of this baggage handling system, was the company’s ability to employ emulation software technology for visualising, testing and verifying controls software.  The commissioning phase was also optimised with simulation and a complete auto generated emulation model.

As a result, FKI Logistex was able to test the new baggage handling system by subjecting the entire installation to realistic challenges and pressures representing peak passenger throughput at the airport.

The new Baggage Handling System for T2, Shanghai Airport incorporates an extensive new hall featuring ten check-in islands.  These comprise three domestic and seven international areas providing a total of 352 check-in positions.  Safety screening of baggage is carried out in the check-in area with two take-away conveyors transporting items from each island to the baggage sortation hall.

Terminal 2 Shanghai AirportFKI Logistex high-level control and sortation systems ensure maximum operating efficiencies and reliability.  The use of fully redundant hardware ensures automatic and immediate, seamless switchover to back-up systems in order to avoid any interruptions to baggage processing.

As part of the Shanghai T2 contract, FKI Logistex Customer Service and Support (CSS) will provide technical assistance, maintenance and training engineering with its CSS personnel remaining onsite at the airport for 18 months. The company’s back-up services are widely acknowledged to be one of the best in the industry at providing fast and efficient support during the entire lifetime of each FKI Logistex baggage handling installation.

The Shanghai Pudong Airport T2 contract is one of the latest of a number of major baggage handling systems installed by FKI Logistex in South East Asia. These include, for example, Bangkok, Manila, Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, Hanoi, Guangzhou and the new terminal 3 in Singapore Changi Airport. This rapidly increasing regional presence has been underpinned by the recent formation of FKI Logistex China.
