FKI Logistex gain a baggage handling contract for an airport in Johannesburg
Partnership is strengthened further with new central terminal installations needed in build-up to 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Continuing a well-established and long-term partnership, FKI Logistex - a leading global provider of automated baggage handling solutions - has been awarded a major new contract to supply advanced baggage handling systems for the new Central Terminal Building (CTB) at OR Tambo International Airport, formerly Johannesburg International, in South Africa.
Acknowledged to be a vital element in the successful staging of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the CTB project is designed to handle the tremendous growth in passenger traffic at what is already the busiest airport on the continent and the air transport hub of southern Africa. The FKI Logistex CTB contract will involve linking the existing domestic and international CTB baggage handling systems to become one integrated system - supervised totally from a single central control room.
FKI Logistex will be supplying two of its well-proven S-3000E Tilt-tray Sorters in a double configuration - installed one above the other for full redundancy. Spiral chutes provide the discharges and standard SAI-2B systems handle baggage induction.
The Upper Level Control System will incorporate an FKI Logistex Sort Allocation Computer (SAC) serving Terminals TA, TB and CTB with comprehensive planning, 'track and trace' and statistic capabilities. In addition, the Upper Level Control System will feature an FKI Logistex Management Information and Control System (MICS) system linked to a two x four metre video wall for supervising operations in all three terminals. The Sort Allocation Computer will be based on the well-proven FKI Logistex SAC application.
FKI Logistex has been one of the preferred suppliers of Baggage Handling Systems for Johannesburg International Airport for a number of decades. During this time, the company has installed complete baggage handling systems as part of a continually ongoing expansion programme at the airport.
These have included systems ranging from belt conveyors at the check-in areas in the international terminal (TA) to an FKI Logistex S2000 Tilt-tray Sorter. This system initially incorporated 38 discharge-loading positions for containers and baggage trolleys but was later extended by an additional 20 positions.
In the past, FKI Logistex has also expanded the international baggage sorter capacity at the airport by extending its Tilt-tray Sorter length and adding a new in-feed system and integrated automatic storage for baggage checked-in early. The company also supplied an upper level Sortation control system.
Other key FKI Logistex installations at Johannesburg International Airport have included a complete new baggage handling system for the upgraded domestic terminal (TB). This incorporated 75 check-ins and conveyor systems, automatic early baggage storage and a Tilt-tray Sorter with 5 inductions and 34 make-up chutes.
"We are delighted to be given the opportunity to support OR Tambo International Airport on the development of the new central terminal", says Erik Hoffmann-Petersen Director of Airport, FKI Logistex Europe.
"We regard this project as a natural development of the long and good relationship between OR Tambo International Airport and FKI Logistex.
