FKI Logistex Celebrates Success at Changi Airport T3 with Baggage Handling System

Fki Logistex

FKI Logistex®, a global leader in integrated baggage handling solutions, has announced the successful installation and handover of a major Baggage Handling and High Speed Transfer System at Terminal 3, Changi Airport – operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and recognised as one of the most advanced and passenger friendly airports in the world.

Designed and engineered by FKI Logistex using specialised simulation and emulation software technology has ensured the Baggage Handling Systems will cope with passenger growth forecasts until 2017, with the advanced software able to visualise, test and verify all controls.

The company also carried out high-level Factory Approval Tests (FAT) prior to shipping equipment to the site to ensure smooth running of the systems, and in the event of any system interruptions.

Erik Hoffmann-Petersen, Director for Airport Systems, FKI Logistex Europe, says: "The flawless start-up of this sophisticated state-of-the-art terminal is clearly a tribute to thorough preparation and to a very close collaboration between all parties involved. For FKI Logistex, the achievement was even more noticeable in the view of our successful start-up in the same week of the new Pudong Terminal 2, which is similar in size to Changi Terminal 3".

Crisbag Baggage Handling SystemsCurrently, Changi Airport T3 has an annual capacity of 20 million passengers. The sorting of bags is based on two FKI Logistex Tilt-Tray sorters, each some 1,000 metres long, with 44 make-up chutes, one inter-terminal system; and a 10,000 CrisBag® unit integrated into the system to handle all transfer baggage.

This tote-based high-speed transport system moves baggage between the three terminals and also functions as an early baggage storage system, with capacity for 4,000 items.

FKI Logistex is providing a full Operation and Maintenance (O&M) contract for Changi T3. Although involving more personnel, this is similar to the company's O&M service agreement for the airport's T2, which has been operational for some eight years.

As a result, FKI Logistex assumes sole responsibility for operation and maintenance of all Baggage Handling Systems in the two terminals. FKI Logistex personnel operate the Baggage Control Room 24/7, providing preventive maintenance to ensure optimum system availability and performance.
