  • FKI Logistex® to install major upgrade to secondary sorters of existing automated baggage system
  • Part of a HKIA major capacity enhancement works to increase capacity
  • Work to be carried out in 5-hour slots to minimise disruption

FKI Logistex – a leading global supplier of automated baggage handling systems have been awarded a contract by Jardine Engineering Cooperation (JEC), who is the main contractor of modification and extension of the secondary sorters of existing automated baggage handling system at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), as part of a HKIA multi-million investment to enhance the overall baggage handling capacity.

Baggage Handling System

Baggage Handling System

HKIA manages an average of 110,000 pieces of luggage for departing, arriving and transfer passengers each day. The secondary sorters of the existing baggage-handling system, which was installed by FKI Logistex, consists of eight tilt-tray sorters divided onto two mirrored sets. Working in partnership with the main contractors, Jardine Engineering Cooperation (JEC), FKI Logistex will add three new inductions and around fifteen chutes for Early Baggage Storage lanes to each of the existing secondary sorters, as well as extending two sorters by 30 meters each. The control system will also be re-configured to match the enhanced system layout.

The addition of Conveyability Kits (Con-kits) will increase system up-time and reliability by closing the gaps between the sorter trays to prevent irregularities, such as baggage straps, becoming trapped between the trays with the flow of 4800 items per hour.

Baggage Handling Software

The baggage handling software will run an FKI Logistex System Controller (CSC) on a standard server software module which is specific to the Tilt-Tray sorting system. In addition, Hong Kong’s Tilt-Tray sorting system operates with a redundant CSC system in hot-standby to safe-guard against system down-time and further improve reliability.

Henrik Cort, International Sales Manager for FKI Logistex, outlined the particular challenge of extending the HKIA system, “It is vitally important to minimise disruption to the smooth operation of the existing system whilst the enhancements are being installed. FKI Logistex has, therefore, scheduled work to be carried out during a series of 5-hour overnight slots during normal system maintenance hours.”
