ASFT in Sweden have since May 20th, 1991 manufactured the original Saab CFME.The owner of ASFT was at that time, approached by Saab Automobile AB and General Motors (GM) to manufacture and market the Saab CFME. This was a challenge that ASFT took on with great success. It also ensured the continued production and survival of the Saab CFME, or SFT as it has become known to the world.

The challenge is to manufacture equipment that has good reproducibility. In order to do that successfully it has to meet many parameter, but two basic once need to be satisfied firstly. First it needs to be heavy, and second stable enough to keep a constant vertical down pressure on the test wheel.
These are also the reason that airports that are using the friction testers in operational conditions (snow, slosh, standing water, etc) successfully are using integrated friction testers. ASFT runway friction testers are today being used at many airports in operational conditions. They can measure in high speed and with perfect reproducibility in any weather. At some very busy airports they are even measuring with two testers at the same time in order to keep up with the operational demands, and this could not be done if the reproducibility was not to par.
