Burlington International Airport in Vermont, U.S. serves both the U.S. and Canada with commercial flights by the major carriers, as well as routes flown by charter and private aircraft.
In 2002 Densiphalt® was installed on a push back apron to avoid rutting and minimize maintenance while the area is constantly exposed to heavy static and channelled loads. The latest improvement at Burlington Airport has been the addition of an extra gate area and passenger flight bridge for a new carrier, serving passengers at the airport. Not long after the boarding bridge began operating, the airport experienced rutting and maintenance problems with the new bituminous concrete pavement.

Traditional pavement materials would not provide the 20 year design life, ease of maintenance, or construction turn time necessary to meet Burlington’s repair requirements. The pavement in the passenger boarding area had to resist rutting from the heavy static and channelled loads at 17.5 tons per tire.
In addition the airport required a pavement that was fuelresistant, impermeable to de-icing liquids and able to withstand high temperatures, freeze/thaw cycles and large temperature variations. To help meet these requirements the pavement could not contain any saw or construction joints that would make it difficult to maintain. With the new carrier already providing service, the pavement rehabilitation had to be completed in 6 days. Densiphalt® provided an excellent pavement solution to the challenges facing the airport on this repair project.

1,250 m2 of concrete was exchanged by Densiphalt®. 10 cm of the existing bituminous concrete was milled out from the push back apron and replaced with 10 cm of Densiphalt® which was installed on top of a welded wired mesh.

The purpose of the welded wired mesh was to increase the bearing capacity of Densiphalt® further.
Following the rapid installation and the curing of Densiphalt® being 24 hours at 20ºC, Burlington’s newest carrier was back in business. For the high stress service conditions and maintenance efficiency requirements in airport areas, Densiphalt® is the natural choice for a long lasting, high performance pavement solution.
