National Air Traffic Services (NATS) handled 213,756 flights in August, a rise of 6.8 per cent over August 2004. Despite rising traffic levels, NATS continued to improve its service to customers with the average NATS attributable delay, per flight, falling to 30.7 seconds compared to 31.7 seconds in August 2004, a reduction of 3.2 per cent.
The Scottish Area Control Centre at Prestwick recorded the highest growth for August 2005, with an increase of 5.8 per cent to 55,126 flights. The London Terminal Control Centre at West Drayton reported an increase of 4.1 per cent (118,293 flights); the Oceanic Centre at Prestwick also recorded an increase of 4.1 per cent (35,436 flights); the London Area Control Centre at Swanwick recorded a 4.0 per cent increase (171,206 flights); and the Manchester Area Control Centre recorded a 1.6 per cent increase (55,402 flights).
Of the 14 UK airports where NATS provides the air traffic control service, 12 showed increased commercial air traffic over August 2004. The highest increases were at London City (33.6 per cent), Southampton (26.2 per cent) and Aberdeen (17.2 per cent).
Transatlantic flights were up 10.4 per cent to 16,525 as a result of higher traffic volumes between Germany, France and North America.
European destinations showing strong growth included Portugal, up 10.8 per cent (to 3,557 flights); Switzerland up by 9.6 per cent (to 4,009 flights); Italy up by 9.2 per cent (to 9,454 flights) and Spain up by 8.9 per cent (to 22,327 flights). UK domestic traffic increased by 7.2 per cent.
