NATS, the UK’s leading air traffic management provider, handled 184,018 flights in January, a rise of 3.7 per cent over January 2006.
NATS' London Area Control Centre at Swanwick, Hampshire recorded an increase of 3.0 per cent bringing the number of flights to 148,181. The London Terminal Control Centre at West Drayton showed growth of 3.1 per cent to 107,881 flights, the Scottish Area Control Centre at Prestwick reported an increase of 4.7 per cent to 47,918 flights and the Oceanic Area Control Centre, also located at Prestwick, recorded an increase of 3.5 per cent to 29,675 flights.
Collectively, traffic grew by 1.7 per cent at the 15 UK airports where NATS provides air traffic services. Growth was more pronounced at some regional airports, such as Farnborough with 29.1 per cent growth, Cardiff with 17.9 per cent and London City with 17.7 per cent.
The Transatlantic market performed well with arrivals/departures and overflights showing growth of 7.7% and 7.1% respectively. Non-transatlantic overflights showed an 18.2% increase with the largest growth from Poland, Germany, Spain, Italy and Ireland.
