As part of the developments for the 2008 Olympic games, the CAAC have invited a limited number of consultants to submit design proposals for the expansion of Tianjin airport. The airport will be developed as a second airport for Beijing and the region, allowing for the significant peak numbers of visitors during the Olympics.
Currently the airport is a single runway and terminal operation handling up to 1 million ppa. The proposals under development will see the phase expansion of the airport ultimately up to a twin runway airport handling in excess of 30 million pax by the year 2030.
The Atkins design is based upon an incremental development of a single terminal operation that has at its heart a clear separation between the landside and airside concourses via an internal/external landscaped zone.
